Greetings, Jeff. Far from 'belabouring the poster's issue' what my post (albeit unintentionally) opened up was a considered, intelligent and respectful discussion on what the concept of 'free speech' actually means. I think the manner in which this was conducted does nothing but shine a light on the fundamental decency of the majority of the people that are drawn to this forum. For myself, I don't consider free speech to be an absolute right in any way, instead I consider it a privilege that we, as civilised people, extend to one another, and that the granting of that privilege comes with a responsibility to use it wisely.

Onward indeed.

Well said Rob.
It was both spirited and respectful. Many different points of view were brought to light. I for one have seen much to make me pause and think. That is a great thing!!

Thank You one and all!!
This discussion to me is a perfect example of why we all love and are "passionate" about this place. Honest respectful discourse.

I'll check in with all of you again tomorrow!!
Good night my friends.

Both civiliZed and civiliSed are acceptable spellings, though the Z spelling is the more commonly used. I'm just a card-carrying contrarian.

Rasta - Richard Lederer is the father of Howard Lederer, the "Professor of Poker" and Annie Duke, the first woman to win the World Series of Poker. Spent many a (long-winded) evening in his company. BTW, Howard is a HUGE Deadhead and has Garcia canvasses in his home.

Your well thought out and exceptionally well worded response here is a perfect example of what this place is at its best: a free exchange of information and ideas, done so in an unthreatening a way as possible.

That, or yet another example of a well-educated blowhard from the UK seeking attention through the regurgitation of fancy words comprised of more syllables than the average American can count.

Some day, yrs from now, when we are troubled yet again, you can modify this fine thread, and clear the board, eh?

A pleasant thought to end my day; the most fun I've had on the Forum in a long spell.

Thanks for starting it; it went just as you described above.

Yep. The part that i like most is that we can talk shit about someone else and they cant even defend themselves.
